The Maldives is one of those destinations where the marketing makes everything look the same — turquoise water, overwater villas, pristine white sand. Scroll through enough resort websites and they start to blur together. But spend any time actually researching and you'll quickly realise that not all Maldives resorts are created equal. The difference between getting it right and getting it wrong can be thousands of pounds and a holiday that doesn't quite live up to the dream.

We've been sending clients to the Maldives for years, and we've learned what actually matters when choosing a resort — and what's just clever photography.

The Transfer Question

This is the first thing to sort out because it affects everything else. Some resorts are a 20-minute speedboat ride from Malé airport. Others require a seaplane transfer that can cost £400-600 per person return. Seaplane resorts tend to be more remote and exclusive, but the transfers only operate in daylight — so if your flight lands late, you're spending a night near the airport before continuing.

Neither option is better or worse. But if you're travelling with young children or arriving on a late flight, a speedboat resort will save you stress and money.

All-Inclusive vs Half Board

On a resort island in the middle of the ocean, you can't nip out for a cheaper meal. You're eating at the resort's restaurants or not at all. This is why we almost always recommend all-inclusive or full board in the Maldives, even for clients who wouldn't normally choose it.

The à la carte prices at most five-star Maldives resorts are eye-watering. A main course can easily run to £40-60, cocktails £15-20 each. An all-inclusive supplement that seemed expensive at booking often pays for itself by day three.

The biggest regret we hear from Maldives clients who went half board: "We spent more on food and drink than we did on the room."

Overwater vs Beach Villa

The overwater villa is the iconic Maldives image — steps leading down from your deck into the lagoon, glass floor panels, the sound of water beneath you. And they are special. But beach villas often offer more space, more privacy (no neighbours on either side connected by a jetty), direct beach access, and they're usually significantly cheaper.

For couples on a special occasion, an overwater villa for at least part of the stay is worth the premium. For families, a beach villa with a private pool is usually the better call.

What to Actually Look For

Beyond the obvious, these are the things that separate a good Maldives experience from a great one: the house reef quality (some resorts have incredible snorkelling steps from your villa, others have dead coral and little to see), the island size (too small and you'll feel confined after a few days, too large and it loses intimacy), and the guest demographic (some resorts cater to honeymooners, others to families, others to party crowds — make sure you pick one that matches your vibe).

Our Recommendations

We don't believe in one-size-fits-all recommendations. The right resort depends on your budget, who you're travelling with, what you want from the trip, and when you're going. What we can tell you is that we've visited and researched extensively, and we know which resorts deliver on their promises and which are coasting on pretty pictures.

If the Maldives is on your radar, get in touch. We'll ask the right questions, cut through the noise, and match you with somewhere that's genuinely right — not just the resort with the biggest marketing budget.
